In India, the innermost part of the temple is called GARBHA, womb — very meaningfully. Where the deity of the temple sits, the innermost shrine is called GARBHA — the womb. In olden days Temples were built by Mystics not just by stone cutters. There is a bigger mystical science behind than you can imagine.
Whatever I am saying applies similarly to Churches and Mosques, I am taking temples as an example because I have grown around them.
Today let me share two important components of Indian temples
Garbha: Which is where deity of the temple is kept and it’s the most sacred place of the temple.
Second is,
Temple bell: Most of the old temples have large bell at the entrance of the temple and you need to ring it before you enter temple.
Let me start with temple bells first. A Temple bell is another scientific phenomena; it is not just your ordinary metal. It is made of various metals including cadmium, lead, copper, zinc, nickel, chromium and. manganese. The proportion at which each one of them mixed is real science behind a bell. Each of these bells is made to produce such a distinct sound that it can create unity of your left and right brain. The moment you ring that bell, bell produces sharp but lasting sound which lasts for minimum of seven seconds in echo mode good enough to touch your seven healing centers or chakras in your body.
The moment bell sound happens your brain is emptied of all thoughts. Invariably you will enter state of Tran’s state where you are very receptive. This Trans state is the one with awareness. You are so occupied in mind that only way to awaken you is with a Shock! And trust me Bell works as Anti-dote to your mind.
Before you enter temple – to awake you and prepare you for taste of awareness is the real reason behind temple bell. In other words “it helps to ring to wake yourself Up!” . To an extent Fragrant generators, Low light lamps all form Ecosystem to create awareness. I’ll brief you some other day about mysteries behind each one of them
Bells had other reasons also, as most of the old temples never had doors and were located near hills and forest there would have been distinct possibilities for animals, Insects, birds to take shelter. But bell sound doesn’t allow any of the living creatures to sustain inside for a long time. So don’t be surprised if you find Old temples still brimming with energy inside with less dust, no sign of insects or animals.
As soon as you come close to innermost center of the temple you come to “Garbha Gudi” or “Womb center” Or “Place of origin”. Now to be honest deity is an excuse to create effect on you. Deities work as your focal point. Idea is to remind you of your womb and your nine months. Idea here is to remind you of true potential! Idea of Garbha is to reminnd you of your inner source!
Womb also signifies tremendous potential of a child when he is born. As Zen say “everyone is born as a Buddha But you just forget it”.
And this is what Jesus says ” be a child like to enter heaven” he says be child like in potential not childish which you end up becoming mostly.
In silence your thoughts have tremendous potential to become reality. This is why people say “My prayers have come true”.
Indeed every prayer has potential to come true provided you prayed in deep awareness. My friend Deepak Chopra in his book calls this phenomenon as “Law of intention” This is also known as “synchronicity”.
In deep silence your silent consciousness is ripened field. But in this ripened field , your mind enters and creates evil ways as you pray for money, house, wife and other selfish needs. All your wishes are too self-centered and it can create conflicts with other people wishes. Other people are also asking for money wife and everything you are asking.
So mystics found another way of encountering this issue. In order to create more cosmic thoughts and avoid mind created local thoughts – they created Mantra’s – In origin the very reason of mantras is to create certain vibrations in you. Mantras were created with intention to override your thoughts and include more Cosmic thoughts. That’s why in temples they tell children not to speak but listen to mantras! But the Priests have forgotten the art of throwing energy into words or Mantras. That secret art of saying Mantras is a separate topic for another day.
Now coming back to deity, Deity itself has no meaning unless you create. Deity is used more as a focal point or to attack your Mind.
But then larger idea behind the mystics has been lost partly due to priests and partly due unawareness. Mystics Idea of temple was to keep alive the flame of Meditation or awareness in you. Temples are used as reminders to your inner source.
Temples does’t belong to any religion, temples does’t belong to Hindus. Temple does’t belong to any beliefs. Temple is just a Roadside rest place for people on path. Churches, Mosques also serve you same way. All roads leads to just one place!.
Once you have deepest experience of Meditation then you forget temple and move on: Then You create temple inside you. Then you forget bell and create sound of silence inside you. That’s the sign of yogi or saint. Saint is the one who has dropped all worshiping places and found one in his heart.
Next time when you visit Temple, Church or a Mosque don’t focus on your prayers and dream wishes. Leave God alone for sometime and go deep inside. Get taste of awareness and get taste consciousness. Suddenly you will find godliness inside you
I love you and Love is my message

Suresh, It’s nice to see your blog. It’s amazing to see some one from my city is making waves in wordpress.
that apart My father was a “Archaka” or priest. Somehow I always hated to go to temple and I rebelled against temple and belief system. To me it was old idiotic belief to go to temple. I read your blog today and I wish my father had insight to explain me the way you did. It makes lot of sense to me. I rebelled against All beliefs in my Hindu family because they never told me hidden meaning properly.
thank you for sharing this and I will go to temple to find my inner temple and probably my Anna will be pleased to know that.
LOve suresh and thank you so much.

Such a wonderful and deep description, Suresh!
Last time in India I visited many great and small temples and though the bramins were just terrible, the temples and swayambus gave a very sptog impression.
One interesting thing I also lerned there: just before a swayambu, the most secret place where the deity resides (like an altar in a church) there is always a turtle-symbol on the floor. It maans one should be like a turtle coming closer to God: take all your attention inside and listen to your silence. I found the sign so beautiful and deep!
In fact, in every religion there have been people who had the true knowledge and they left the messages in the temples, mosques and churches…
However INIDA is really the source of saintity.
Can not keep myself from quotating Mark Twain :”India is, the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the mother of history, the grandmother of legend, and the great grand mother of tradition. Our most valuable and most instructive materials in the history of man are treasured up in India only.”
I completely agree with Axinia’s observations. My last visit to India was disaster with priests loooting me money to show god and around. At the same time I was lifted by sheer energy of the Temples.
I also saw mysteries of India slowly disappearing in the hands of priest and politicians.
Suresh, This is incredible service to human kind that you are preserving the secrets of India. Your blog alone covers so many mysteries we have missed.
And what a photo! feels like heaven!
Suresh
My dost, what a photo!
I remember ten years you walked on Ganga River banks to meet my Baba (Dad). he was always in Namaz. I remember you waiting for hours to take his blessings. Baba got up from Namaz and told you ” may Kali Mata bless you”. I asked Baba that why did you give him a Hindu blessing. Baba laughed and told me ” all temples and mosques are just outer different structures and Inside all these there is just emptiness”. For years I remembered that conversation.
Inshallah, Today I fondly remember you and good to know you preach what you practice. Let Allah bless you with love. And Let Jesus bless you with Christ consciousness and I bless you Mohabbath for life.
Love you
Suresh thanks for such a wonderful education.
I have never been to India and I am not sure I will before my death. Hope in my next life I get a chance to see or hope I am born there in my next life ( hahahah)
WOW! your post looks like now secret society! I want to be the goddess here! Coz I am one hell of hot looking chic!
Thanks Anupama, Good to have you on site and welcome.
Axinia: You have been such a darling to this site so hats off to you.
Mansoor: Nobody has ever taught me so much on mysteries of this world as much as your dad did. He showed me path to inner journey. I was lucky to be initiated to all religions thru BABA. I love Baba and I love you Dosth!

Suresh, next life you want to be born in India again? Or you are going to live 200 years? Anway, it is not fair: we are struggling here in the West and you are enjoing the best vibrations and powers of India?! Very smart..:))
ALL ROADS LEADS TO JUST ONE PLACE! i very well agree.
Thank you. Lovely photo and great post too. And it makes so much sense; temples and sacred spaces seem so much more powerful when they are quiet and completely empty!

Suresh,
Can you please write a post on the eating habits & spirituality..?
Satva, Raja & tamas guNa & the variety of dishes attached(does it make sense this way?)
Offlate, whenever I think about spirituality, a flash of a man on a moterbike swims thru my mind!
You take great pictures too!!
Veena, I did a post on eating habits check this out

I never knew this about temples…
Thanx for the wonderful info…
Suresh – Your post is an eye-opener. Just like many other practices in India that lost its true meaning during the medieval ages, the sanctity of temples also went dry. I noticed on several temple visits that the Garba-grihas have a certain energy inside.
About the “Law of intention”, there is a good book by Dr. Wayne Dyer. I got the book from the local library, but because of eye problems I could’nt read much. Although I did listen to his tapes. And for the first time I began to believe that all we need is good intentions to get closer to our dreams.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful views, Suresh.
Hi Suresh Gundappa:
I came to your blog from http://lib1point5.wordpress.com/
Are you a librarian, too?
Great job and good insight, for those who are looking for far sight.
Good breeds good, and keep up the good work.
Best wishes,

Hello Sureshg
When I have a time,I’m surfing and of course I couldn’t forget about your amusing website;)
Regrets

Suresh, I’ve just now had a chance to really read your amazing post here and so many things came up in me. One, I was reminded of some windchimes that are made locally here. They are long pipes (annodized???)..not sure of the metal(s) used…but when they chime, it is (to me) like the sound of holy gongs, church bells, and the sound of the Universe (Aum). I literally feel these vibrations inside of me – first physically and then, well, deeper. And I am always changed by the hearing. It is much like the Singing Bowls we used to use during our yoga/meditation times. Somes sounds just seem to be so very resonate. THANK YOU for your beautiful words and pictures. This was a true blessing today!
Beautiful photo and great information…
Thats really amazing to read a lot about the science hidden behind temples..
i think, in the past everything had ben created with a logical reasoning behind it..but with the passage of time..message and thinking got distorted and we were left with certain norms and traditions that we have to foolow without knowing their true meaning..
Beautiful landscape!!
Very nice insight suresh.
May be you would like similar thoughts in this site about why we do rituals, what is the science behind it.

Nice to know there are people like still exixt
you are great
and hope to hear more
Interessare, molto interessante. Come avete fatto questo?
good info.. but can i have the sources as to which jounal or magazines???
Suresh,
Wonderful explanation. Good to note that many people are opening up to idea of pure science behind religion; science that we have forgotten.
In our holy scriptures ( Upanishads ) we have the concept of a subtle thought taking the form of a sound ( OM ) which expands further to become the basis of the Creation of the Universe as we know it. The practicality aspect of it is there in the Big Bang Theory. Going by the same logic, the importance of Sound ( Vibrations ) in the physical domain cannot be neglected.
Each vibration has distinct or unique effects on each physical entity. The levels of vibrations evoke specific responses in each depending on the acceptability conditions of the entity. Metal Bells, Specifically designed Hollow spaces ( temples ), air movement within the structure etc all produce specific vibrations conducive for aligning the localized energy centres ( Chakras ) with the higher cosmic energy. Understanding the same is vital.
GOD Bless !
